Popular Newburgh boxing club shut down by city

Newburgh city officials shut down a popular boxing club because of numerous building code violations.
The Washington Street center housed the Boxing Club of Newburgh, which was considered a safe haven for many kids in the city. They not only learned the basic fundamentals of boxing, but more importantly, the center kept kids active and off the streets. Boxing club directors believe a visit by the Guardian Angels last week prompted the city to kick them out.
Officials say the building had 24 code violations, which is why it was shut down. The city building inspector says he shut down the building before the Guardian Angels came to Newburgh. City officials will meet with boxing club directors on February 28 to discuss a new location for the boxing program.
