Hudson Valley lawmakers discuss day laborer hiring site locations

The recent closing of a day laborer hiring site in Mamaroneck has sparked discussions among Westchester and Hudson Valley lawmakers about where to create new sites.
Advocates for immigrants living in the area, county legislators and municipal leaders met Tuesday in White Plains to try to create a better solution for day laborer hiring sites. Village of Mamaroneck leaders say they shut down the site near the Metro-North train station because of an influx of workers, which became a liability. Some village officials blame neighboring communities that don?t have hiring sites for the influx.
City leaders from Port Chester and New Rochelle attended the meeting to offer advice on how their cities developed successful hiring sites. Westchester and Hudson Valley lawmakers say they are willing to pitch in ideas for new sites. Legislators say they plan to hold more meetings to improve the day laborer situation.
