Residents fear Chester homeless shelter housing high-risk sex offenders

Posted: Updated:

Some residents living near a Chester homeless shelter are afraid the facility is housing Level-3 sex offenders.

Over the weekend, a resident of the shelter, known as Camp LaGuardia, climbed into the back yard of a Seely Avenue homeowner. The trespasser was arrested and a background check revealed that he was a convicted sex offender. The shelter was unaware of his history since his convictions were in California.

Loopholes have residents worried. While it's the shelter?s policy to turn away Level-3 sex offenders, New York State's own sex offender registry shows several high-level sex offenders have lived at the shelter over the years. Camp LaGuardia sent them back to New York City when notified of their status. Orange County officials say they are working to correct any loopholes in the system.
