An Elmsford plumbing and heating company is being cited for lapses in safety that caused a trench to collapse on a worker in Greenburgh.

Ricardo Gutierrez, 27, was trapped in a six-foot hole with dirt up to his neck after a trench collapsed behind a house on Ardsley Road Thursday. Rescue workers freed Gutierrez after an hour and a half and he was rushed to Westchester Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Greenburgh's fire marshal issued a summons Friday to the contractor on the job, Rodrick Plumbing and Heating. Reports show the trench was not shored up, which allowed the shift in tree roots to cause the collapse.
