A new homeless shelter is set to open in Valhalla but a lawsuit is trying to block that.
Opponents want a judge to keep the county shelter from opening when the old shelter at the county airport closes. The lawsuit looks to prevent the shelter from moving to the grasslands reservation where the county jail, Westchester Medical Center and children?s hospital are located. Crews are continuing construction to the 149-bed facility, which will also house sex offenders. Opponents say the county didn?t get its contract with the shelter?s operator, Volunteers of America, approved by a public referendum as required by county law. The county has until December 8 to respond to the suit. The shelter is set to close at the airport on December 17.
