Police say a man took his own life after holding two people hostage in Newburgh.
Authorities say the incident began Sunday morning on South Miller Street when Jose Torres, 44, allegedly shot his 16-year-old girlfriend Luz Nieves. Police say Torres fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle. Police spotted Torres and say he pulled out a gun, took a teenage girl hostage and barricaded himself inside an apartment on Farrington Street. Hostage negotiators convinced Torres to release both hostages but he ended up taking his own life. Neither hostage was injured.
