A medical malpractice lawsuit in Rockland finally came to an end Thursday after two doctors were found negligent in the death of a West Nyack man five years ago.

Howard Hoehmann was admitted to Nyack Hospital in 2000 with a mild case of pneumonia. As a result of the antibiotics he was receiving, he developed a serious bowel infection. A jury found that Dr. James Vela and Dr. Stephen Goodman of Gastro Intestinal Associates of Rockland failed to diagnose the infection and as a result Hoehmann died.

Six jurors awarded the family $750,000 for pain and suffering and $70,000 additional expenses, which was four times the amount that was suggested. The hospital was also named in the suit but was found to have no responsibility. The doctors have appealed the lawsuit.
