Visit by federal agencies to Indian Point sparks protest
At least three federal agencies are taking a hard look at security and emergency planning at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Tuesday.
As part of a Department of Homeland Security review, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the FBI are touring the plant to see what kinds of security and emergency planning measures should be in place. In recent months, there has been increased concern over local emergency plans, especially after several failures connected with the system controlling emergency sirens in the four counties surrounding Indian Point.
However, the arrival of FEMA brought about protests from Riverkeeper, an environmental group. Riverkeeper says FEMA failed to evacuate people in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, so how can they do the same for residents of Westchester and Rockland.
Entergy, which owns Indian Point, says the security of the plant is the best of any nuclear facility in the country and it can only get better with this week's review by Department of Homeland Security.
