Rep. Lowey pushes for emergency evacuation plans for Indian Point

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Harrison) is pushing the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies to review security and emergency plans at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant.
Next week, the Department of Homeland Security, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other federal agencies will all visit Indian Point. Lowey released a letter Friday to Department of Homeland Security, demanding it evaluate and respond to known problems with the plant?s security and emergency preparedness. Lowey particularly wants flaws in the siren system and evacuation plans addressed.
According to Lowey, Hurricane Katrina made it clear that more must be done to prevent and prepare for large scale disasters. She says she wants to make sure Department of Homeland Security makes recommendations to eliminate existing gaps to ensure the safety of local residents.
