Orange County politicians plan to talk with officials in New York city about safety improvements at a Chester homeless shelter.

Camp LaGuardia, which is owned by New York city, houses 1,000 homeless men. Rev. Karen Green says her congregation used to do programs with the men, but not after two incidents at her church involving men who lived in the shelter. In 2002, a woman suffered permanent facial scars as a result of being slashed by a resident of Camp LaGuardia.

As a result, the shelter installed close-circuit televisions and installed fencing to help ease community fears. County Executive Edward Diana is preparing to go to New York City on Friday and talk to the Department of Homeless Services about making more improvements to the shelter.
