Governor Pataki announces he will not seek a fourth term

Governor George Pataki (R-NY) announced Wednesday he will not seek a fourth term in office.
Pataki became governor after defeating Democratic icon Mario Cuomo. Under Pataki, New York lived through the September 11th attacks. He also supported gay and abortion rights. Recent polls in New York had shown Pataki trailing state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, in a possible 2006 gubernatorial match up.
The governor is now weighing a possible bid for the White House in 2008. He says although that's down the road, he is not ruling anything in or out.
