Senator Schumer wants government all aboard for train security bill to help Hudson Valley commuters
After a hike in the terror alert and the destructive bombings in London, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) wants increased spending on mass transportation security.
Schumer lobbied at a New York train station Monday for an amendment that would hike federal spending on train security from $100 million to $400 million by 2006.
Schumer says for every $7 spent on airline security per year, only a penny is spent on rail security. Although Schumer acknowledges the government?s efforts to improve aviation security as beneficial, he still says the rail line safety tactics are far behind schedule. Schumer says about $50 million of the $400 million he?s petitioning for would finance bomb detectors placed in stations and rail cars
County officials say since London?s bombing attacks, extra security measures have been taken. New Rochelle has increased the number of officers per train station to at least five, but leaders say this takes resources away from neighborhoods.
Schumer plans to push the $400 million amendment to the Homeland Security Spending Bill on Tuesday.
