Police say an elderly Valley Cottage woman was fatally struck by a passing car Tuesday while attempting to cross Route 9W.

Police say the incident occurred at the Lake Road intersection near the entrance to the Rockland Lake State Park. According to witnesses, the driver was unable to stop and struck 74-year-old Shirley Williams. The elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officials are still investigating the incident. However, they say they have no reason to believe the driver was speeding. No charges have been filed against the driver.
