Haverstraw mayor to appear in court next month on drinking and driving charges

Haverstraw Mayor Francis Wassmer is in trouble with the law. Police arrested 59-year-old Wassmer on West Broad Street just after 4 a.m. Sunday. Wassmer has been charged with Driving While Ability Impaired. He faces up to $500 in fines and 15 days in jail. Some business owners say it was only four days ago that the mayor came down hard on police about not doing enough to maintain the quality of life around the village. They say it's possible that meeting sparked tension between the mayor and police. Police are not releasing Wassmer's blood alcohol level. He is scheduled to appear in village court next month.
