St. Joseph's School in Spring Valley closes its doors for goodPosted: Updated:
It is the last day of classes for Catholic schools, and St. Joseph?s School in Spring Valley is closing its doors for good.
The New York Archdiocese says in the last few years, Catholic school finances have been battered by declining enrollment, rising costs and competition from other schools. The archdiocese put together a reorganization plan that resulted in the closing and consolidation of many schools and parishes. The four schools in Westchester that are shutting down are St. Pius X in Scarsdale, Holy Family in New Rochelle, St. Matthew?s in Hastings, Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Anthony in Yonkers.
Parents and teachers rallied to save their schools when they first got word about the closing in February but the decisions were already made. Both teachers and students at St. Joseph?s were visibly upset the school will no longer be open after 78 years.
