Sen. Charles Schumer pushes for City of Newburgh to hire more police officers to combat crime
The City of Newburgh has been ranked as one of the most violent places in the nation, but officials are hoping to to enact changes that will reverse those figures.
According to the FBI, violent crime in Newburgh affects one out every 16 residents.
Newly appointed City of Newburgh Manager Michael Ciaravino was among officials Tuesday, including Sen. Charles Schumer, who said the city's police force of fewer than 80 officers is not enough to adequately combat crime.
Newburgh is looking to acquire four new officers under the federal COPS Hiring Program. That number is the maximum the city can attain due to the way the program is set up. Sen. Schumer says the number can be easily changed by the Department of Justice, based on the rate of crime and general need.
The COPS program pays for newly hired officers for three years.
Mayor Ciaravino says the city needs about 20 more officers to be able to make a huge difference.
