Construction is expected to close a crucial section of Airmont Road next week. While the town says the repairs are necessary, commuters say it is going to cause a major headache.

Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence announced Wednesday that Norfolk Southern will be replacing the railroad crossing on Airmont Road after the town received countless complaints from commuters.

St. Lawrence said commuters would complain about flat tires and tons of potholes.

Airmont Road is the busiest county road in Rockland. More than 50,000 cars funnel onto the road from Route 59 and the New York State Thruway every day.

The Highway Department says it is going to take about three days to move a brand new track over to where the old railroad track currently is.

Business owners and commuters say it will cause an inconvenience, but the construction will be worth it.

The Highway Department has labeled detours away from the construction via Route 59, Spook Rock Road and Hermion Road.

Airmont Road will be shut down Friday, July 18 at 10 a.m. and is expected to reopen Sunday, July 20 in the evening.
