Democrats hope to retain control in NY Senate

Posted: Updated:

Democrats are hoping to retain control of the Senate in New York and if they do, history could be made.

If the Democrats remain in control, state Sen. Andrea Stewart Cousins could become the state's first female and African-American majority leader.

Democrats outnumber Republicans 33 to 30, but Republicans have control, thanks to six breakaway Democrats. Around eight seats up for vote this year are considered toss-ups.

Thirty-two seats are needed to win control of the chamber.

In the 40th state Senate District race, Republican Terrence Murphy has defeated Democrat Justin Wagner. The two were running for the seat that will be vacated by state Sen. Greg Ball.
