911 dispatcher helps caller deliver babyPosted: Updated:
A 911 dispatcher is being credited with helping a frightened caller deliver a baby Saturday morning.
Mercedes Davila, of New City, says her water broke and that she started crowning while on the way to her car. She says she felt a lot of pressure and had to go back into the house.
Her sister-in-law, Nicole Felder, of Pomona, called 911 and was connected to Clarkstown police dispatcher Lorraine Monahan.
Monahan says dispatcher training includes how to talk someone through a delivery when waiting for help to arrive.
By the time the paramedics arrived, Nina had already been born, with Felder acting as midwife.
"My sister-in-law Nicole, she did pretty much everything," says Davila. "I couldn't even think, and by the time I thought, she was out."
Nina and her mom were taken to Nyack Hospital after the birth. Nina is now heading back home, where she has two big brothers waiting to welcome her.
