Deer season is now in full swing, and that means drivers need to be cautious.

Through the month of September, there have been more than 1,200 deer-related collisions on the New York State Thruway. The Thruway Authority and police are urging motorists to keep their eyes peeled for deer, especially at night.

Trooper Melissa McMorris from the New York State Police told News 12 that people should never swerve their cars to avoid hitting a deer. She says that it is a better idea just to hit the brakes and try to keep the vehicle going in a straight line.

The Thruway Authority says if you are involved in an accident with a deer, be sure to park on the right shoulder of the road with the flashers on, and stay in the car until help arrives.
