Protesters call for justice in wrong-way crash case
The drunken driving homicide case against a White Plains firefighter has only just begun, but friends of the victim are already calling for justice.
As News 12 previously reported, a 47-year-old mother of two, Reyda LaMadrid, was killed Nov. 3 in the wrong-way crash in White Plains. LaMadrid's husband Edgar Lopez, was left seriously hurt with several broken bones.
Authorities say the driver, city firefighter Eric Refvik, was drunk and had suspicious powder in his car. They say the powder is now being tested for drugs.
Refvik, who appeared in court Monday, apologized through his attorney for his actions and later posted bail.
Members of Hispanics Across America stood in front of the DA's office, urging a thorough investigation. Some people protesting didn't know the victim's family personally, but felt compelled to call for justice.
A spokesperson for the DA's office says police have interviewed Lopez, and they have been in touch with family members. News 12 is told investigators are waiting for Lopez to be released from the hospital to speak with him further.
