Terror threats prompt extra airport security

Posted: Updated:

The Department of Homeland Security is making airport security changes after a renewed push by terrorists to activate extremists.

The U.S. is now expanding random security checks of passengers in airports once they have already made it through airport security.

Those second checks at the gate could include an additional bag search, passenger pat down and hand swabs for traces of explosives.

The extra vigilance is in part due to Al Qaeda's propaganda magazine 'Inspire' which lays out instructions on how to make non-metallic bombs with simple household products.

U.S government officials say airport body scanners can normally catch these hard to detect explosives but the advanced technology is not available in some smaller airports.
