State budget restores critical funding to Rockland schools

Posted: Updated:

State lawmakers passed a budget last night that includes a restoration of $230 million in school aid statewide, including nearly $4 million restored to Rockland County schools.

The restoration of funds is a victory particularly for the East Ramapo School District, which received $1.7 million, and the Clarkstown School District, which received $431,000 in restored funds.

Rep. Ken Zebrowski (D-94th District) admits school districts will still feel the pinch, but he hopes the move will provide some relief.

School officials say the restoration means less teacher layoffs and the restoration of some student programs. They say it will also help decrease property tax increases that were proposed for this year.
