NY Legislature passes budget with 2-percent spending cut

The state Legislature passed a $132.5 billion budget in Albany last night, approving the plan by the deadline for just the fourth time since 1983.
The Republican-led Senate passed its share of budget bills by midnight and the Democratic-led Assembly got its bills through early this morning.
The budget is historic because it transforms state spending with a 2-percent decrease, in turn helping lawmakers eliminate a $10 billion deficit.
Some residents spent today protesting the budget cuts. With the 2-percent decrease comes deep reductions in education and health care funding.
Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) says the painful budget will begin transforming the way state government works.
