Gay West Point cadet denied readmission speaks to News 12Posted: Updated:
An openly gay former West Point cadet spoke with News 12 Hudson Valley via Skype today about being denied readmission into the academy, saying the decision left her surprised and devastated.
Katie Miller left the military school last summer over the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, saying that she wanted to come out publicly about being a lesbian. When she had a change of heart, she says a West Point official told her that she wouldn't be readmitted because she's gay.
The young cadet says the decision surprised and devastated her, but since then, the policy has technically been thrown out. West Point released a statement saying that the effective date for the repeal has not yet been determined.
Miller is currently in her junior year at Yale and was recently awarded a scholarship for her activism on behalf of gays in the military. She says she left her application to West Point open in case she decides to reapply.
