Vanderhoef: Rockland finances a sinking ship
County Executive Scott Vanderhoef (R-Rockland) says county government will in large part be dismantled and layoffs could be coming unless a multimillion-dollar budget deficit can be closed.
Vanderhoef says the government's best efforts to run a tight ship ran right into a sinking economy producing fewer sales-tax receipts. He says that led, in part, to a $50 million deficit in the county budget.
The county executive says the only choice is to consolidate as much as possible and cut non-mandated programs such as prenatal care and chronic-illness prevention programs.
Vanderhoef says he will be submitting bills to the Legislature shortly to ask for increases to mortgage and hotel taxes to try and plug the budget hole.
He must submit his 2012-2013 county budget by October.
