Sea captain praised for diver's rescue
A dive boat captain from West Nyack is being praised after he helped save a distressed diver from the Atlantic Ocean during a deep sea excursion gone wrong.
Capt. Hank Garvin was leading a group of research divers 70 miles off the shore of Long Island last month when his longtime friend, Sally Wahrmann, suddenly disappeared.
"The other divers were already up. I asked them where Sally was, and nobody knew," he says.
Wahrmann was missing for three hours while the group frantically searched above and below sea for their friend. Garvin led the search and began coordinating with the Coast Guard.
Ultimately, it was a fishing boat that found the 62-year-old diver from Long Island.
