Federal judges dismisses lawsuit against village of Kiryas Joel

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit calling for the village of Kiryas Joel to be dissolved.

The lawsuit accused leaders of discrimination and argued the community of Hasidic Jews is an unconstitutional "theocracy."

The group behind the lawsuit, known as the dissidents, pray outside the main congregation and say because of that, they are targeted by local officials who abuse their power.

The judge dismissed the lawsuit, saying some of the allegations had already been addressed in previous cases and others were lacking evidence.
