Community seethes over Spring Valley police-involved shooting
The Rockland Immigration Coalition plans to meet with community leaders tomorrow to address growing unrest over a police shooting death of a Haitian immigrant in Spring Valley.
Holding signs and demanding justice for Herve Gilles, hundreds of outraged demonstrators marched down Main Street to Spring Valley Police headquarters yesterday.
The group claims police used deadly force during an altercation with the 48-year-old Haitian immigrant.
On Franklin Street, candles and flowers mark the spot where Gilles was killed last week.
Police have promised to investigate the incident, saying it does not appear the officer did anything wrong. So far, authorities have not disclosed the name of the officer involved or the results of Gilles' autopsy.
