Mahwah River overflows; homeowners spared damage

Posted: Updated:

Suffern residents are breathing a sigh of relief after flooding caused by the Mahwah River overflowing spared their homes.

Heavy rains last night caused the river to overflow and flood a nearby park. Rockland County officials were so concerned about flooding in Suffern that they had a team of inspectors out to make sure there were no trees blocking the flow of the river.

During Tropical Storm Irene, dozens of homeowners living near Lonergan Avenue were flooded so bad that they couldn't get back into their homes for weeks. Some of the damaged homes had to be condemned.
