Police: Indian families target of thieves, possibly internat'l gang
Greenburgh police suspect that Indian families living in the area are being targeted, possibly by an international gang.
In recent weeks, burglars broke into the home of Dharmistha Patel and police say it?s because she is Indian. The reason behind this, police say, is that thieves think Indian families are more wealthy. Her family home is one of the six Indian homes broken into in Edgemont in just the last month.
Indian community leaders and Paul Feiner, the Greenburgh town supervisor, met on Saturday to discuss how to handle the situation.
"We're going to do everything possible to make sure we address this problem," said Feiner. "We want people to feel safe and be safe."
Police suspect a Colombian gang from New York City may be behind the robberies. Hudson Valley isn't the only county facing the problem, either. Indian communities throughout the tri-state area are dealing with a major rise in crime.
