Former state Sen. Leibell won't take office as Putnam Co. executivePosted: Updated:
Former state Sen. Vincent Leibell was reportedly in federal court today in White Plains, but he did not plead guilty to federal corruption charges.
Leibell has notified Putnam County officials that he will not take office on Jan. 1, 2011. Putnam County Legislator Mary Ellen Odell, who lost to Leibell in the Republican primary and general election this year, has been named as a possible replacement. Odell says she is not surprised Leibell is facing charges of felony bribery and money laundering.
However, despite running for the job earlier this year, Odell says she does not want the interim post. "It's probably in the best interest that the sitting county executive, Mr. Bob Bondi, continues on."
Bondi has told News 12 that he will consider taking the interim appointment if the county board asks him and if his family approves.
