In a speech at the bridge, Cuomo said the bridge is in better shape than he expected, but if current plans to replace the aging span move forward, creative plans for financing the project must be developed.
The price of the bridge replacement has been estimated at approximately $16 billion.
One possible source of funding mentioned was the federal funds opened up after the cancellation on the Hudson River tunnel project by Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.).
Residents living near the bridge are generally skeptical that a replacement span will materialize, but if it does, the issue of funding it is in the forefront of their minds.
One thing they say they don't want to see is more taxes to fund the project, which Cuomo has said he will not do.
