Rockland opens center to comfort rape victimsPosted: Updated:
Rockland County has opened a new center it hopes will serve as a haven for children and adults who are victims of crimes such as rape and abuse.
Detective Lt. Mary Murphy, of the Rockland County District Attorney's Office, says dealing with the aftermath of a crime such as rape can be traumatic.
"It's an intrusive exam," he says. "It becomes very difficult and then there is the matter of all the interviews. So many people need to hear what happened."
District Attorney Tom Zugibie says the new center will bring many agencies under one roof to aid special victims, instead of shuffling them between the police department, hospital and social services.
