Judge orders recount in state Senate race; could take 1 weekPosted: Updated:
The results of one Hudson Valley election may not be learned for another week after a judge ordered that all emergency and absentee ballots remain uncounted for now.
Democrat Suzi Oppenheimer is currently leading her Republican opponent Bob Cohen by a mere 180 votes, leaving the two with 50 percentage points each with 80 percent of the vote already having been counted.
The results of this election could have a big impact in Albany, where out of the 62 seats, Democrats won 29 last night while republicans took 30, with three races still up for grabs, including Oppenheimer and Cohen's.
Depending on the outcome of those other undecided races, a win for Cohen could mean there will be an equal number of Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate.
A hearing is scheduled for a week from today to determine how election officials will go about counting the remaining ballots.
