Cops: Ellenville murder suspect surrounded
Authorities say a New City man suspected of killing an Ellenville rehabilitation center worker this morning has been surrounded by police at an upstate home.
Investigators say 24-year-old Richard Giga, of New City, stabbed the 60-year-old man to death at about 3:30 a.m. while trying to escape from The Renaissance Project, a secure drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility where he had been a patient for the past six months.
Giga then allegedly used the knife to force a female worker to drive him away, but the suspect apparently stabbed her multiple times while she was at the wheel, causing the car to flip over on Ulster Heights Road.
The woman was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Police say Giga has a criminal past and is dangerous. In 2008, he was charged with attacking and robbing three men.
