After a passenger van carrying 14 people flipped on the New York State Thruway, killing six and injuring eight on Saturday, experts are warning about the inherent dangers of the vans.

The van that crashed was a 1997 Ford E-350 and vans like them are meant for carrying cargo and not people.

Cliff Berchtold, the director of transportation for the Monroe-Woodbury School District, said that the vans don?t meet the same safety standards that the federal government requires for cars.

Berchtold says that instead of using that type of passenger van for schools, they use a multifunction school activity bus, which is designed to carry people and is held to higher safety standards.
