Polls show Lazio may face upset in GOP primary for governor

Posted: Updated:

One of the biggest primary races in New York tonight is arguably the Republican primary for governor, as polling numbers show the two candidates neck-and-neck after a rollercoaster campaign season.

Former Rep. Rick Lazio was 40 points ahead of his challenger, millionaire-Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino, this past summer in polls, and had been considered a shoe-in for the nomination. Polls taken just last week, however, show the two candidates are now at a near tie.

Paladino, who has no political experience, has been painting himself as an angry political outsider and has garnered a strong tea party following.

Lazio, who voted in Bay Shore this morning, says that with his party's backing, he's confident that he'll win tonight.
