Wake, funeral services planned for fallen Tarrytown firefighters

Memorial services begin today for one of two Tarrytown volunteer firefighters killed in a tragic manhole rescue earlier this week, as a state investigation into their deaths is launched.
Anthony Ruggiero was working for the village DPW when he climbed into a manhole to inspect a reported sewage backup Monday afternoon behind the Consolidated Engine Firehouse 77.
When Ruggiero collapsed, volunteer firefighter John Kelly rushed in after him, but was also rendered unconscious. State investigators hope to determine if the presence of fumes, or possibly the lack of oxygen, contributed to their deaths.
Wake services for Ruggiero begin today at the Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown from 7 to 9 p.m. and will continue tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
Wake services for Kelly begin tomorrow from 3 to 9 p.m., also at the Coffey Funeral Home. A special service for firefighters and medics will be held at 7:30 p.m.
