Ex-New Square clerk gets 27 months in jail

Former New Square Village Clerk Avrum David Friesel, 57, was sentenced to 27 months in prison this week for stealing millions of dollars from federal assistance programs.

Friesel, who is the son of current New Square Mayor Mates Friesel, will also have to pay $11.6 million in restitution.

The former clerk was convicted of stealing tens of millions of dollars from federal grants for bogus schools he created. He had avoided capture by hiding outside of the country for more than a decade.
