Lightning strikes Washingtonville condo

Posted: Updated:

Residents at a Washingtonville condo complex say they are certain that a lightning strike is to blame for a fire in one of the units there, although fire officials are still investigating an exact cause.

Condo resident Timmy Breheny says he was inside his condo with his father yesterday afternoon when lightning apparently struck their condo. "I saw this big flame ... almost like a sunburst, a terrible explosion," Breheny says.

Breheny's apartment quickly filled with smoke after the apparent strike, but both father and son made it out OK. Firefighters say they were able to contain the ensuing blaze to the space between the first-floor ceiling and the second floor.
