United Water to start applying surcharge to water bills

United Water will start applying a monthly surcharge to water bills beginning in July.
The company, which provides water to more than 70,000 customers in Rockland and Orange counties, underestimated its revenues last summer. By law, it can recover the difference from consumers.
Customers will see the $5 monthly surcharge on their bills for the rest of 2010. The surcharge comes as United Water is proposing a permanent rate hike of around $10 a month.
The Public Service Commission will consider the company's rate hike proposal when it convenes in Albany July 15.
