Last day to file for new homebuyer's tax credit
New homeowners across the Hudson Valley are scrambling to take advantage of the homebuyer tax credit before tonight's midnight deadline.
The purpose of the tax incentive was to help stimulate the depressed housing market. Realtors say the program has worked and is playing a big role in the increased home sales in the area.
Earlier this week, the Westchester Putnam Realtors Association reported that home sales in parts of the Hudson Valley have almost doubled since last year.
People buying a home for the first time can get up to $8,000, and some current homeowners might be eligible for a smaller credit of $6,500 if they haven't made a purchase in the past five years.
