Nanuet School District to lay off teachers

Posted: Updated:

The Nanuet School District announced Tuesday the elimination of five teaching positions due to budget cuts and the loss of state aid.

Some parents were relieved, saying the number of layoffs could've been higher. Others, however, expressed concern as to how the cuts will affect the students.

The Teachers' Association pointed out that the layoffs will not affect class sizes.

"It is a very difficult budget, but it's one that preserves all of the district's programs," Nanuet Superintendent of Schools Mark McNeill said in a statement to News 12.

A public hearing on the school budget was held Tuesday night at the Nanuet High School library.
