Hundreds of students protest teacher layoffs

More than 500 students protested against proposed layoffs in the district by gathering on the Minisink Valley High School athletic field before school Monday.
Last week, the district announced 31 teachers and counselors would be laid off in order to save money. In addition, about two dozen teachers' aides and several athletic coaches will lose their jobs.
The school district says the layoffs will save about $3 million and the district is facing a $2.7 million cut in state educational aid.
Students, like Katelyn Geiger, say the cuts will result in crowded classrooms and lack of individualized instruction.
