Makeover of downtown Haverstraw shelved

State money that has been allocated for a revitalization of downtown Haverstraw is now set to go toward a project in Westchester County instead.
Nine blocks of the downtown area were supposed to get new sidewalks, lighting and trees. However, the state has decided to pull the $2.5 million grant and use it to rebuild the Bronx River Parkway bridge in White Plains.
State officials say Haverstraw won't see the money until 2013.
"To say that it was a surprise or disappointment would be an understatement," says Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut.
The state Department of Transportation says Haverstraw hadn't filed all the documents necessary for the project to be approved.
