Highway dept. budgets plummet after winter storms

The Ramapo Highway Department is digging deep into its allotted budget after sending out trucks once again to clean up Tuesday?s snowstorm.
Two dozen trucks hit the streets to spread salt over icy roads Tuesday and Wednesday. The department?s superintendent, Charles ?Skip? Vezzetti, says nearly 1,000 tons of salt was used to tackle the storm.
About $270,000 of the highway department?s $475,000 salt budget has already been spent.
The Rockland Co. Highway Department in New City says only two-thirds of its salt budget has been used.
