Police keep mum on DNA link in Garza case
State police refrained Wednesday from confirming or denying media reports of a break in the case of a Brooklyn woman who went missing in December 2008.
Fox 5 News reported that a DNA link had been found between Laura Garza and Michael Mele, a convicted sex offender from Orange County. Investigators say Garza was last seen with Mele after leaving a Manhattan nightclub.
Mele is currently serving a prison term on a probation violation for an unrelated crime. He has never been charged with Garza's disappearance.
State police only confirm that they have recently received a number of forensic tests, the results of which were sent to the district attorney.
