Federal program lets Haitians to stay in U.S.

In the wake of the devastating earthquake, illegal immigrants from Haiti, including those living and working in Spring Valley, will not be deported to their ravaged homeland.
Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin says under a new federal program, Haitians who arrived in the United State before the Jan. 12 earthquake will receive a temporary protective status.
The immigration order called TPS was spearheaded by Rep. Elliot Engel (D-Bronx). It allows Haitians to live and work in the U.S. for 18 months without fear of being sent home.
Mayor Jasmin is encouraging local Haitians to call the immigration program and get registered before the July deadline.
