Rockland declares war on illegal dwellings

Posted: Updated:

Rockland County Fire and Emergency Services Director Gordon Wren is calling on residents to report illegal dwellings created using partitions.

"We've been aware for years of the violations going on out there," Wren says. "It just seems lately they are getting worse."

People are asked to call 845-364-8800 to anonymously report an illegal dwelling. Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef says the call can save lives. In 2005, two firefighters jumped to their deaths while fighting a blaze inside a Bronx building that contained illegal apartments.

Firefighter Jeffrey Cool, who also took the jump, says they lost their way in the smoke and flames because of illegal partitions.
